电池的英文很多人都知道是battery/?b?tri/。

所以说起生活中我们常用到的“5号电池”“7号电池”，可能不少人会脱口而出“no.5 battery”“no.7 battery”。

但这其实这是典型的中式英语，在国外商店买电池这么说，老外肯定会一头雾水。

事实上，“5号电池”的英文表达是 aa battery（读作：double a battery 或者aa battery）；“7号电池”是 aaa battery（读作：triple a battery 或者aaa battery）。

而还有相对少见的、比较肥大的“1号电池”是d battery。

比如，美剧《生活大爆炸》第二季就出现过“triple-a batteries”这个表达。

那么问题来了，aa、aaa 和d指的是啥？

首先，我们要明确，所谓5号7号是我们国内的通俗叫法，国际标准叫法由iec(international?electro-technical?commission，国际电工委员会)规定，都是叫d、aa、aaa的。

其次，这些字母也并不代表某个单词。

在过去最开始时，人们根据电池尺寸大小，把电池命名为 a、b、c、d 四种类型。但随着电子设备耗电量越来越小，尺寸也越来越小，人们需要比 a 型电池更小的电池。但原来最小型电池已用了 a 开头，没有字母排在 a 前面了，所以人们只能用 aa和aaa 来命名更小的电池。

这就是五号电池叫 aa battery，七号电池叫 aaa battery 的原因，也解释了为什么a字母越多，尺寸就越小。

另外，电池除了叫battery，也可以叫cell/sel/。

英语单词?cell是一个多义词，它其实很有趣，原本表示“连在一起的小房间”，后来类似这样结构的东西，都被叫为cell，诸如蜂巢里面一个个连在一起的蜂室，修道院中每个修道士或修女住的一个个小房间，或者监狱里连着的一间间牢房，还有显微镜下一个个连接在一起的细胞。

至于为什么电池也叫cell，那就要追溯到电池的发展历史了。

在电池的发展是一个不断改良的过程，其中有个非常重要的，促使电池能提供更长、更稳定的供电能力的过程，需要多孔的陶器作为隔离器。
